If you have a fetish for input buttons don't forget to check this out.

Here is a LIVE demo showing how input buttons are rendered in your browser. The 'Standard' column will look different depending on your operating system. The '+ Border' column shows the same buttons with a red border added. (This removes the default button style as seen in the first column.)

Applying Divine Proportions to Your Web Designs

Saturday, June 28, 2008 - Lawrence Hsu | BC

Since the Renaissance, many artists and architects have proportioned their works to approximate the golden ratio — especially in the form of the golden rectangle, in which the ratio of the longer side to the shorter is the golden ratio. The rationale behind it is the belief that this proportion is organic, universal, harmonic and aesthetically pleasing. Indeed, being evident everywhere in the universe (in fact, many things around us can be expressed in this ratio), divine proportion (which is also called Golden ratio, divine section, golden cut and mean of Phidias) is probably the most known law of proportion which can dramatically improve the communication of your design.

A Design is Finished when... 23 Pro Designers' Opinions

Friday, June 27, 2008 - Lawrence Hsu | BC

One of the most important and hardest things to overcome when designing is to understand when the piece you are designing on is actually finished. while creativity is sometime boundless the end result should always be the result of a clear objective, the end result. I often get caught between creativity and completion and from the emails I've received, I have discovered im not alone .So we asked the experts.

Writing an Interface Style Guide

Tuesday, June 24, 2008 - Lawrence Hsu | BC

If you have ever designed a beautiful interface only to find it ugly five months later because gaudy graphics, unpleasant colors, and distasteful fonts appeared over time, then you understand how maddening design disintegration can be. Similarly, if you have ever developed a clean, web standard, and accessible interface but later found the site littered with invalid, inaccessible, and presentational markup, then you understand this frustration as well. Documentation can help avoid these issues—it provides guidance on how to maintain and update the interface, and keep it beautiful at the same time.

How to Theme any CMS Using Firebug (and MediaWiki as an Example)

Friday, June 20, 2008 - Lawrence Hsu | BC

Often in my career as a web ninja, I've been asked to skin or theme open source projects to bring them in line with my clients brand. Depending on the project this can be more, or less frustrating (I'm looking at you Magento) but MediaWiki is one of the easier projects to work with because of the limited number of files and things to adjust. In this tutorial we'll go through the theming process I used to style the upcoming PSDTUTS Wiki, but the process, particularly using Firebug, could be applied to pretty much any CMS.

Firebug is good, but you might want to check out CSSEdit if you're a Mac user :]

CSS Decorative Gallery

Tuesday, June 17, 2008 - Lawrence Hsu | BC

I’m using the same trick to show you how to decorate your images and photo galleries without editing the source images. The trick is very simple. All you need is an extra tag and apply a background image to create the overlaying effect. It is very easy and flexible — see my demos with over 20 styles, from a simple image icon to a rounded corner to a masked layer (both decorative and complex).

24 Kick Ass Portfolio Designs

Sunday, June 15, 2008 - Lawrence Hsu | BC

Many of my choices happened to be one page design portfolios. I always tend to gravitate towards the one-pagers because of the simplicity and easy to follow flow. I don’t like to click around to hunt good work down. If it takes me more than 5 seconds to locate your portfolio - then I am off to another site. My own portfolio is a one page site. Through my research in finding the best designed portfolio sites I looked at grids (which always hold my attention), typography and navigation / layout of the site.

Input vs. Button

Thursday, June 12, 2008 - Lawrence Hsu | BC

My latest redesign project at work was for Group Logic. Another company did the design and created static HTML templates. My role was to create a single header and footer to make maintaining the site easier, and to wrap the store and other dynamic applications in the new design. The company who designed it used images for the form buttons, and I found some interesting things while implementing them.

Which CSS Grid Framework Should You Use for Web Design?

Thursday, June 12, 2008 - Lawrence Hsu | BC

Ever wondered how all those slick "magazine" themes for WordPress and other platforms were created? Many, if not all, were designed using a CSS Grid Framework - at least in essence if not in actual fact. That is, you can use an existing CSS framework or build your own from scratch. While it's possible to design complex web page layouts without a framework, it's arguably an act in masochism. In this article you'll get an overview of the current batch of Frameworks and which you should choose to use.

In case you were wondering, I personally prefer Blueprint CSS as well.

The Cure for Content-Delay Syndrome

Wednesday, June 11, 2008 - Lawrence Hsu | BC

In the vast majority of website projects that I have managed during my ten years in the industry, content is often the last thing to be considered (and almost always the last thing to be delivered). We’ll spend hours, weeks, even months, doing user scenarios, site maps, wireframes, designs, schemas, and specifications—but content? It’s a disrespected line item in a schedule: “final content delivered.” It’s the perennial cause of delay and the stuff of myth (I once shelved a project for three years while the client “wrote” his content.) It’s a malaise that needs fixing and needs fixing fast.
